2017 ABC Excellence in Construction Award

The Project: Color accurate restoration of finish to historic Cape May Lighthouse.

The Scope: Perform surface preparation a apply protective coating to 157.5 foot lighthouse exterior.

The Catch: Working in a coastal environment with continually changing winds and weather conditions made flexibility in scheduling and management a key to maintaining customer schedule. The goal was to have the paint project completed by Memorial Day for the beginning of the tourist season. Colors and coatings applied were required to match historical accuracy for one of the most iconic lighthouses on the Eastern shore.

As a public entity, the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities sent work out for bid to the general public. Of the fifteen bidding contractors, EISI’s complete program solution was chosen. Our previous work history at the facility, coupled with state-of-the-art coating knowledge clearly separated EISI from the other bidders.

The Result: This goal was accomplished by bringing to bear appropriate skilled resources to perform surface preparation and coating application, all while working out of multiple man-lifts, including a 180' man-lift to reach the upper portions of the light house.

One of the biggest challenges to the project was the safe access to apply paint. Using a 180' boom lift presents a challenge under the best of conditions. Working in conjunction with coastal winds and facility traffic, “challenge,” was an understatement. Workers were specially trained for the high reach and coordinated their efforts with ground spotters to maintain safe operating conditions.

Safety for this project was facilitated in a variety of ways including:

  • Special training for the operation of a 180' high reach
  • Daily company Safety Task Assessment
  • Coordination and communication with facility supervision
  • Communication with National Parks personnel
  • Weekly toolbox meetings
  • Weekly job safety audits
  • Outstanding project management

EISI experienced zero injuries, incidents or illnesses during the project.
